The sun splits the earth,
No sound disturbs the fields;
The joyful songs
Of the birds that once sang can no longer be heard.
All by the heat slumbered
Under the bushes have lurked.
Only a cicada is on the threshing floor.

Her sonorous belly moves;
On a sheaf she is set;
Alone she is not exhausted
By the star with the breath of fire.
And the tireless singer
Throws into the burning blue air
Her endless ritornello.
