Marius, the son of César, the barkeeper of the Marine, spends his time admiring the ships that call at the Old Port. He lives for only one thing: to embark on a ship and leave for faraway lands. He is so obsessed with this idea that he doesn’t even see the love that Fanny, the seashell merchant, has for him since childhood. To attract his attention, Fanny decides to make him jealous and lets herself be courted by old Panisse, a friend of César. But if Marius also loves Fanny in secret, he cannot keep his desire for the open sea quiet.
